Brennan crashNovember 19, 2010 – NORTH KONA, Hawaii

Colt Brennan, former University of Hawaii football star and Washington Redskin draftee, was seriously injured in a car crash in North Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, police have confirmed.

This photo of the scene was shared to us through local twitter user, Mitch Hawaii. He later tweeted, “Our prayers go out to Shakti Stream as well as Colt Brennan, both who are well thought of in Kona Community.”

The Honolulu media were the first to report that the Warrior football great was involved in the wreck that shut down parts of the Queen Kaahumanu Highway in the area of Makalawena near the 90-mile marker in North Kona.

A short time later, Big Island police issued the following statement:

Three West Hawaii motorists were seriously injured today (Friday, November 19, 2010) in a two-vehicle crash on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway in the area of Makalawena near the 90-mile marker in North Kona.

Responding to a 9:36 am call, Hawaii Police Department officers determined that Shakti Stream, a 27-year-old Kona woman was driving north in a 1997 Toyota SUV when she crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 1996 Saab sedan that was headed south.

Stream and her passenger, Colton J. Brennan, a 27-year-old Kona man, were transported to North Kona Community Hospital in serious condition.

The driver of the Saab sedan, a 47-year-old Waikoloa woman, was transported to North Hawaii Community Hospital in serious condition.

The roadway was temporarily closed and re-opened at about 11:15 am.

Police have opened two negligent injury investigations. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation and it is undetermined at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Officer Paula Jelsma at 326-4646, extension 253.

Brennan shattered passing records at Hawaii during the 2005-2007 seasons. He was a Heisman trophy finalist in 2007, and set a NCAA single-season record for touchdown passes in 2006 with 58. In 2008, he was drafted by the Washington Redskins and was released this year.

Media reports say that Brennan was spending time on the Big Island’s sunny, west side recently.  The location of the crash on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway is just a few miles north of the intersection of the Kealakehe Parkway; the road where NFL football star Jesse Mahelona was killed in another crash a little over a year ago.

UPDATE – Media reports now say Brennan has been  transferred to The Queen’s Hospital in Honolulu, with possible head and back injuries.

Hawaii247.com, which has also been following the story, posted a statement from Brennan’s agent Ryan Tollner:

“We have been informed that Colt was injured as a passenger in car accident this morning on The Big Island of Hawaii. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital and has since been transported to Honolulu for further medical attention. We do not know the severity of his injuries at this point, but that his condition is serious. We are not aware of the status of anyone else involved in the accident but our thoughts and prayers are with them. No details of the accident have been revealed to us. Colt’s family asks that the public is respectful of the hospitals and medical staffs focused on treating the individuals involved in this accident.”
